My professional network, vizualised by LinkedIn

The big advantage of LinkedIn having an office in the Netherlands, is that the LinkedIn labs are shared quicker in my Dutch network. For example, this feature shows me the various kind of networks that I’m in.  And it did pretty good, with only a few exceptions. It actually seperated the people who I know from my bachelor from those who I know from my masters.

Does emigration kill my professional network?

Within two months I will be moving to  Boston. Of course, I wish it would have been my career that made me and my husband move to the States, but it isn´t.  Albeit,  he is getting one of the best opportunities a neuroscientist can wish for and I am excited to start a new adventure together, I do have some mixed feelings about it.

Because moving to the USA, also has consequences for my career. In the last five years, I´ve been able to built a professional network.  I´ve worked as a journalist, a PR-professional, a social media trainer and became a copywriter at an HR communication agency.  To my opinion a lot of these working fields intertwine. Besides the fact that I´ve always loved to combine my work as a freelancer next to my job as a webeditor and later as  a copywriter, I also believe this mix can be an advantage for my clients. In other words, my network became valuable.

Twitter begrijpen, gaat in fases. In welke fase zit jij?

Laatst kwam ik onderstaande infographic tegen. Een geweldige manier om uit te leggen dat elke Twitteraar een aanlooptijd nodig heeft om het medium optimaal te leren gebruiken.

In fase 1 sta je nog sceptisch tegenover Twitter. Je vraagt je af waarom mensen zoveel tijd aan Twitter besteden. En eigenlijk zie je het als tijdverspilling.

In fase 2 kun je je nieuwsgierigheid niet bedwingen. Waarom is nog niet iedereen massaal afgehaakt? Zelfs op tv wordt het medium nu al gebruikt! Je zoekt in je mailbox je twitternaam weer eens op en logt weer in. Maar eens kijken wat er gebeurt als je iets roept. Bijvoorbeeld over je lunch, want dat doet toch iedereen?

Je wil persaandacht, zodat je meer klanten krijgt. Realistisch of niet?

Een tijdje geleden vroeg een ondernemer me hoe ze haar naamsbekendheid via media-aandacht kon verhogen. De eerste jaren nadat ze haar arbeidscontract had ingeruild voor het zelfstandig ondernemerschap kreeg ze haar opdrachten vooral via oude contacten. Nu ze een tijdje bezig was, zijn die contacten als het ware ‘uitgeput’. En dus zou wat publiciteit geen kwaad kunnen, was haar gedachte. Maar mijn pr-tips voor startende ondernemers gingen voor haar niet op,  meende ze.  Hoe kon ik haar helpen?
